Building vs. Cultivating High-Performing Teams
The successful Gaelic Football Coach and current Aviation Manager Jim Gavin made a point in distinguishing between building vs. cultivating high-performing teams at our Foundations for Business Growth Workshop, 2025.
“It’s not a one-and-done thing.”
When you build something, you put in the work and once it’s complete it stays the same, and you can walk away. No such thing applies to high-performing teams.
Teams have to be cultivated. The right culture has to be cultivated.
Involvement is crucial, he argues.
“You have to create the right environment for your people.”
Which come down to candour, control and collaboration, the 3 C’s.
Context influences behaviour, systems drive outcomes, and the right environment sets people up for success.
As he talks at the Foundation for Business Growth Workshop, Jim refers to himself as a performance manager. “You’re like a farmer; you have to cultivate your crop.”
For a team, that means offering them the right support system and trust.
“Empowerment creates a healthy, positive and ultimately successful organisation, that’s what I learned in the military.”
Listen to what Jim Gavin had to say about the similarities between managing a football team and leading an organisation: As he says “there’s lots of similarities”
